Subcompact SUVs continue to grow in popularity, as they blur the lines between crossovers and hatchbacks. They blend the footprint of hatchbacks but with the ride height and athletic capabilities of crossovers, all with spacious cabins. The 2025 Honda HR-V takes the aspects of the incredibly successful Honda Civic and Honda CR-V and merges them into a single package. It’s an urban crossover that can squeeze through tight streets and into tiny spaces while handling the bumps and potholes and offering better poor-weather capabilities than hatchbacks. Recently redesigned in 2023, let’s take a look at the 2025 version of the HR-V.

Performance Features

Under the hood of every 2025 Honda HR-V is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This creates 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, providing responsive performance in urban environments as well as smooth highway cruising. Two-wheel drive is standard on all trims, with fuel economy of 26 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. All-wheel drive is available across the model range, and while this reduces mileage slightly, it is a good trade-off – it drops to 25 MPG city and 30 MPG highway. Sitting on the athletic chassis borrowed from the Civic, handling is agile and athletic.

Style and Technology

Unlike many subcompact SUVs that go for a sleek and sporty look, the Honda HR-V looks more like an SUV than a small hatchback. This comes thanks to broader lines and smooth sides, along with a stance that is more crossover than sedan. Sport trim levels get an upgraded exterior appearance.

While the exterior is 180 inches in length – big for subcompact SUVs – it makes great use of it. The seating is on par with many compact crossovers, with room for five including 38 inches of headroom and 37.7 inches of legroom in the second row. The versatility of the HR-V shines as it provides 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all the seats in place. When you need it for errands, from picking up mulch or antiques to moving into a dorm, the second row folds down to offer 55.1 cubic feet of storage.

Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard – wireless in the EX-L trim – along with Bluetooth HandsFree and Bluetooth Streaming Audio. A 7.0-inch color touchscreen is standard, hooked up to a 180-watt audio system with four speakers. A six-speaker version is available, as is a 9-inch touchscreen with 8 speakers and SiriusXM satellite radio. 2 USB charging ports are standard on every model, with available QI-compatible wireless phone charging.

Safety

The Honda Sensing Driver Assistance Suite has long been the benchmark for driver-assistive suites. Standard systems include forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, Traffic Sign Recognition System, and a rearview camera. The Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Monitor is included on all but the base LX trim, while parking sensors and low-speed braking control help out in urban settings like traffic jams and tight parking spots.

Trim Levels

Three trim levels make it pretty easy to find the right 2025 Honda HR-V trim to fit your needs.

The LX trim features 17-inch silver-painted alloy wheels, a body-colored rear roofline spoiler and power side mirrors. The manually adjustable driver’s seat is wrapped in durable, easy-cleaning cloth. Power windows and locks are standard, as is an automatic climate control system. The HondaLink Subscription Service suite is standard as well.

The exterior of the Sport trim stands out in the lineup with 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels, a chrome exhaust finisher, a gloss black roofline spoiler, gloss black lug nuts, and a sport grille. Gloss black heated exterior mirrors clear away ice and snow in the winter. Inside the cabin, heated front seats help out in the winter as well, while the steering wheel and shift knob are wrapped with leather. Power front windows get auto-up and auto-down, and Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock adds convenience. The audio system is upgraded to a six-speaker version.

Inside the EX-L trim, upholstery is upgraded with leather trim, and the driver’s seat gets 8-way power adjustment. Ambient LED lighting adds a luxury touch, while a moonroof opens up the cabin to the outside. Cabin temperature control is upgraded to a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The infotainment system is upgraded to a 9-inch touchscreen with an 8-speaker audio system, with SiriusXM and HD Radio standard, and Qi-compatible wireless phone charging is standard. Outside, machine-finished 17-inch wheels feature gloss shark gray inserts. Low-speed braking control with front and rear parking sensors is included.
