How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Delaney Honda Indiana PA

Learning how to check the transmission fluid level in your Honda can help prevent costly maintenance and repair bills down the line. Here’s how to check the transmission fluid:

  1. Start the car and let it run for a few minutes in order to warm up the engine.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel drive cars, it’s usually located to the right of the oil dipstick. Check your owner’s manual if you’re having trouble finding it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and forefinger. The fluid should be nearly clear, with a pink hue. If it looks dirty or gives off a burnt smell, take it to our Honda Service Center so we can drain and replace the fluid.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick, and insert it back into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the fluid level up to full. Make sure that you don’t overfill it.

How Often Should You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

It is recommended that you check the transmission fluid, as well as the brake fluid, engine oil, power steering fluid, and windshield wiper fluid at least once a month. Your owner’s manual will have the schedule for your specific Honda model.

Transmission Fluid Basics

The transmission has many moving parts and is one of the most complex systems in your vehicle. Here are some things that you should be aware of before you check your transmission fluid:

  • There are different types of transmission fluid for recent models, manual transmissions, and automatic transmissions. Consult your owner’s manual to determine which type of transmission fluid is right for your car, truck, or SUV.
  • To check the fluid on a manual transmission you’ll require a jack to access the plug located beneath the car. If you’re not comfortable sliding beneath your vehicle, stop by our service center near Greensburg and our certified service techs can handle the job for you.
  • If you notice a hesitation when your car shifts gears, it could be due to low transmission fluid, but it may be a sign of a more serious problem. Check the fluid level, if it’s full and the fluid is clean but you’re still experiencing the hesitation, schedule service with us today.
  • Transmission fluid should be changed every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, but it depends on your driving habits, the type of transmission, and other factors. Your owner’s manual will have your specific replacement interval.
